What golf simulator will you actually play on?
There is no shortage of Trackman-versus-Full-Swing comparisons written from manufacturer spec sheets. This one is different: we recorded the system installed at every venue in the GolfSimAtlas directory — 216 of 286 name theirs — so this is what is actually in the bays you can book, and how the mix differs city by city.
The systems you will actually meet
Trackman — 96 venues
Dual radar, originally built for tour players and club fitters rather than for entertainment. It is the same technology used on the PGA Tour broadcast, and it measures the ball and the club rather than inferring them. In this directory it is the default at anywhere that takes coaching seriously: of the 96 Trackman venues, most also offer lessons. If you are working on a swing change and want numbers you can trust, this is the one to look for.
Full Swing — 34 venues
High-speed cameras plus infrared, in an enclosed bay. Full Swing sells hard into the entertainment end of the market, and it shows in where it lands: it is strongest in Atlanta, the most entertainment-led metro we cover, where it is the number one system. Excellent course graphics and game modes; ball data that is good rather than laboratory-grade.
X-Golf — 31 venues
Not a system you buy separately — it comes with the franchise. X-Golf combines cameras and radar and sells the whole venue as a package, which is why every X-Golf you walk into looks the same: same bays, same bar, same booking app. That consistency is the point. 11 of them are in Chicago and 9 in Boston.
Uneekor — 18 venues
Overhead cameras reading markings on the ball. Cheaper to install than Trackman and increasingly common at independent clubs opening in the last two or three years — which is why it over-indexes in Denver, the youngest and most independent market in this catalogue.
Golfzon — 17 venues
Korean, and the biggest simulator company in the world by installed base, though far less visible in the U.S. It comes with a moving swing plate that tilts to mimic lies. Strongest here in Minneapolis.
The mix by metro
The national picture hides real regional differences. Trackman leads everywhere except one city.
| Metro | Trackman | Full Swing | X-Golf | Uneekor | Golfzon |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chicago | 14 | 5 | 11 | 2 | 2 |
| Denver | 13 | 6 | 1 | 6 | 5 |
| Boston | 26 | 4 | 9 | 3 | 2 |
| Minneapolis | 13 | — | 6 | 3 | 5 |
| Dallas–Fort Worth | 25 | 12 | 3 | 2 | 3 |
| Atlanta | 5 | 7 | 1 | 2 | — |
Atlanta is the exception — the only metro in this directory where Trackman is not first. Full Swing leads there 7 venues to 5. Atlanta's scene is the newest we cover and skews social rather than technical: half its venues serve alcohol and its cheapest bay is under $20 an hour. Venues built around a night out buy the system with the better course graphics, not the better launch monitor.
The other clear pattern is Boston's Trackman concentration — 26 venues, more than any other metro — which tracks with it also having the most instruction: 48 of its 64 venues offer lessons. A five-month off-season makes winter coaching a real business, and coaches specify Trackman.
Which should you book?
If you are practising: Trackman or Foresight/GCQuad. Both measure rather than estimate, and both give you carry, spin and club path you can act on. 108 venues here run one or the other.
If you are playing with friends: it genuinely does not matter. Full Swing, X-Golf and Golfzon all render famous courses well, and the difference between a simulator that is accurate to one yard and one accurate to three is invisible when four people are drinking and playing Pebble Beach. Book on price, bay count and whether there is a bar — filters we provide on every city page.
If you are getting fitted for clubs: ask specifically. Club fitting needs club-side data that not every installation captures, and a venue running the same brand may or may not have the fitting package.
Common questions
Is Trackman worth paying more for?
For practice, yes — it is the difference between data you can build a swing change on and data that is directionally right. For an evening out with friends, no. And in this directory Trackman venues are not systematically more expensive; the price is set by the bar and the postcode far more than by the launch monitor.
What is the difference between a launch monitor and a simulator?
The launch monitor is the sensor that measures the ball and club — Trackman, GCQuad, Uneekor. The simulator is the whole package: monitor, projector, screen, hitting mat and software. Some brands sell both halves, which is why the names get used interchangeably.
Why do so many venues not say what they use?
70 of 286 do not. Mostly these are social venues where the technology is not the selling point, and a few are older installations the owner would rather not advertise. If it matters to you, phone ahead — every listing has the number.
